Chances of Severe Storms Loom Over Chicago

A significant weather event is forecasted for the Chicago area, with predictions indicating the possibility of severe storms carrying all weather hazards. Meteorologists from the NBC 5 Storm Team are particularly vigilant about the severe weather chances expected on Thursday, which could coincide with major local events, including the first night of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour at Soldier Field. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming weather conditions.

What to Expect

According to meteorologist Alicia Roman, the day is beginning with mild temperatures but will transition into a hot and humid environment. The forecast highlights a series of weather hazards:

• Potential for heavy rain
• Winds reaching up to 75 miles per hour
• Large hail
• The possibility of tornadoes

Due to dry air in the region, there is also a chance that these storms may not fully develop, but residents should remain prepared. While the morning has started mild with a dense fog advisory in Lake and Kenosha counties until 10 a.m., the real threats loom later in the day.

Temperature Projections

Temperatures are expected to soar into the low 90s in many areas, with some locations potentially reaching up to 94 degrees. In downtown Chicago and along the North Shore, residents can anticipate temperatures lingering in the upper 80s. This heat combined with high dew points will create muggy afternoon conditions.

Interestingly, the record high temperature for May 15 in Chicago stands at 91 degrees, established back in 1962. As the temperature climbs, so will the level of discomfort for many.

Severe Weather Timeline

Most of the morning and early afternoon will remain dry, but conditions are set to deteriorate by late afternoon. The severe storm likelihood is anticipated to increase significantly starting at 4 p.m., when the Chicago area will enter an “enhanced” risk zone for severe weather, ranking level three out of five on the Storm Prediction Center’s scale.

The storms are expected to develop in the western suburbs, specifically in places like Woodstock and DeKalb, and will begin to move east toward Chicago around 6 p.m. As the storms advance, they may also reach parts of northwest Indiana, affecting both residents and concertgoers.

Roman emphasized the unpredictable nature of these storms, noting that one or two could be severe but others might dissipate altogether. “If they do develop, they will be quick,” she stated, indicating a brief but intense deluge.

As folks prepare for the evening, particularly those headed to Soldier Field for the concert, it’s essential to monitor the weather closely. Some forecasting models suggest that storms might split, affecting different areas while potentially leaving downtown Chicago unaffected.
