A Cherished Educator and Family Man
Nicholas “Nick” Ritz Jr., aged 90, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in Scottdale, Pennsylvania. His life was a remarkable testament to dedication—to his family, his community, and his country. Born on November 24, 1934, in Clearfield, PA, Nick grew to embody the virtues of service and commitment that would define his life.
Military Service and Education
After serving honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1954 to 1957, Nick continued his commitment to the nation by joining the Naval Reserve until 1961, achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. His military service deeply influenced his character, imparting values of discipline and responsibility.
Following his military service, Nick pursued a robust education. He graduated from California State University in 1962 and later attended Penn State University. These academic achievements paved the way for a long and fulfilling career in education.
Career as an Educator
Nick dedicated 34 years to the education sector as a special education instructor for Westmoreland Intermediate #7. His contribution made a lasting impact on countless students, embodying compassion and support that every educator strives for. Nick was not just a teacher; he was a mentor and source of inspiration for many.
His involvement with educational organizations, including the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education Association, showcased his commitment to advancing the interests of fellow educators.
A Community Leader
Beyond the classroom, Nick was deeply rooted in his community. A 32nd-degree member of Marion Lodge #762, he contributed time and resources to various local initiatives. His public service extended to over two decades at the Selective Service Base in McKeesport, reflecting his unwavering commitment to community and country.
Nick was also a charter member of the East Huntingdon Fire Department, where he served for more than 65 years. His longstanding contributions included a role as township auditor—a position he held from 1960 to 2017—demonstrating the faith the community had in his judgment and character.
Family Values
To Nick, family was everything. He raised three children: Jeffery A. Ritz of Mt. Pleasant, Jana L. Rago and her husband Vincent of California, and Jolene L. Cummings of Mt. Pleasant. He faced the tragedy of losing his son, Jerald A. Ritz, in 1983, but his family remained a source of strength and pride throughout his life.
Nick’s legacy will be carried on by his grandchildren: Andrew Ritz and Tara Ritz, Kaylee, Julia, and Austin Cummins, along with Philip and Elise Rago. His relationships with them were filled with wisdom and love that will resonate through generations.
Honoring a Life Well Lived
Nick’s passing marks the end of an era where his values of duty, education, and family were held above all. There will be no public visitation; instead, a memorial service will be planned later at the family’s convenience, honoring his wishes. His cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the Frank Kapr Funeral Home Inc. in Scottdale, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cummins Crew Foundation, which supports children who have tragically lost a parent by providing financial assistance for education. This initiative epitomizes Nick’s lifelong commitment to education and helping others in need.
His life story serves as a motivational narrative for many and will undoubtedly continue to inspire those who knew him. The impact he made will remind us of the values he lived by—service, family, and a commitment to bettering the world around him.
