Selection During Board Meeting
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a significant development for Florida A&M University (FAMU), Marva Johnson has been selected as the final qualified candidate for the university’s next president. This decision was made by eight members of FAMU’s Board of Trustees during a board meeting held just before noon on Friday.
Johnson, who currently serves as the Group Vice President for Charter Communications, stood out among the four candidates that were considered for this prestigious role. She had previously participated in campus visits and interviews earlier in the week, making a compelling case for her candidacy.
Competing Candidates
Johnson’s selection has emerged amid a competitive field. The other candidates included:
- Donald Palm – Currently the executive vice president and chief operating officer at FAMU, who received four votes.
- Gerald Hector – Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance at the University of Central Florida.
- Rondall Allen – Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Contract Negotiations on the Horizon
The Board anticipates negotiating and approving President-elect Johnson’s contract in the coming month. Following this, they will recommend her for confirmation by the Florida Board of Governors. This is a crucial step in securing her role as the 13th president of FAMU.
During the board meeting, a motion was also passed to set the salary range for the new president between $450,000 and $750,000. However, Johnson’s minimum salary request stands at $750,000, which is notably higher than what the other candidates had proposed. This request aligns with what former president Larry Robinson earned during his tenure.
Community Concerns
The process leading to Johnson’s selection hasn’t been without criticism. There has been notable skepticism and pushback from the community regarding her qualifications. Just last week, during a town hall meeting hosted by Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor, multiple public speakers voiced their concerns about Johnson, calling her a political appointee and suggesting she lacks the necessary qualifications for the role.
Despite her impressive resume that includes serving as the chair of the Florida State Board of Education and being a member of the University of Florida’s advisory board, critics emphasize her non-affiliation with any specific school as a potential drawback.
Context of the Search
Johnson’s journey to this position follows former president Larry Robinson’s announcement to step down in July. The decision to move forward with the search for a new president was met with controversy, as just weeks ago, FAMU trustees debated pausing the search but ultimately voted 8-to-5 to proceed with it.
Given the weight of the decision and the public interest it has generated, Johnson’s elevation as the top candidate marks a pivotal moment for FAMU. The university community is now eager to see how the impending contract negotiations unfold and if Johnson will ultimately be confirmed as the next president.
