Crimson Tide’s Strong Comeback

Alabama softball had a rocky beginning in their NCAA Tournament matchup against Jackson State. During the first two innings, the Crimson Tide struggled offensively, failing to score any runs as they faced off at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

However, the momentum shifted in the third inning. Larissa Preuitt found herself on third base due to a three-base throwing error by the Tigers. The excitement was palpable, but tension filled the air as two consecutive batters were struck out, putting Alabama on the verge of another wasted opportunity.

Coach Patrick Murphy’s sense of urgency was evident as he motivated Kali Heivilin before her at-bat. He urged her, “Just get the run in. We need this run.” Heivilin responded admirably by singling to shortstop, which allowed Preuitt to cross home plate, putting Alabama on the scoreboard.

Turning the Game Around

Following Heivilin’s pivotal hit, the inning only got better for the Crimson Tide. She promptly stole second base, setting the stage for Marlie Giles, who walked to put more pressure on Jackson State’s defense. With two runners on, Salen Hawkins stepped up and doubled both Heivilin and Giles in, expanding the lead to 3-0. Brooke Ellestad capped off the inning with a single that scored Hawkins, bringing the tally to 4-0.

Heivilin’s contribution in this crucial moment earned her the game MVP award from Coach Murphy. “That helped a lot for getting things going,” Hawkins mentioned post-game, reflecting on the importance of that hit in igniting the offense.

Alabama continued to dominate throughout the game, adding two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The contest ended early after five innings with a wild pitch from Jackson State resulting in the final run, solidifying Alabama’s 6-0 victory.

Pitching and Defense Excellence

On the defensive side, Emily Winstead secured her first NCAA Tournament win, delivering a strong performance in the circle. She finished the game with only one hit and one walk allowed in four innings. Alea Johnson relieved her to finish out the game, maintaining the shutout.

Murphy highlighted the significance of limiting walks in this game, emphasizing the challenge of achieving a no-hitter. “Probably only one walk. It’s hard to throw a no-hitter, or give up no hits, but we’ve been struggling a little bit with walks, so one, I’ll take that all day long,” he stated after the game.

Looking Ahead to Virginia Tech

Alabama’s victory sets the stage for a crucial matchup against Virginia Tech scheduled for the following day. Murhpgy noted that the Hokies, who had secured a win against Belmont in their earlier game, present a significant challenge. He downplayed the importance of their earlier encounters in the season, stating, “It was February but it seems like three years ago. They’re way different. We’re way different.”

As they prepare for a rematch following a split in their previous meetings earlier in the season, both teams will be looking to make their mark in the Tuscaloosa regional. The highly anticipated game is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT, promising fans another thrilling display of college softball.
