Fourth Wing cast news has finally arrived, and Prime Video’s highly anticipated fantasy adaptation has found the actors who will portray its central dragon-riding couple. Esther McGregor has been cast as Violet Sorrengail, while Emilio Sakraya will play Xaden Riorson in the upcoming television series based on Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling novel.
Deadline reported the casting on October 15, 2026. Amazon declined to comment. The announcement marks a major step forward for the adaptation, which has attracted strong interest from fans of Yarros’ Empyrean book series since the project was first announced.
Fourth Wing Cast Revealed: Meet Violet and Xaden
McGregor, known for We Were Liars and Babygirl, will take on the role of Violet Sorrengail. In the novel, Violet is a 20-year-old aspiring Scribe who expects to follow her father’s path as a historian. Her plans change when her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, orders her to enter the dangerous dragon-rider program at Basgiath War College.
Sakraya, whose credits include Those About to Die and Warrior Nun, will portray Xaden Riorson. Xaden is a mysterious and brooding cadet with a complicated family history and shadow-wielding abilities. He is also the descendant of a rebellious group, placing him at the center of the political and personal tensions driving the story.
Violet and Xaden begin their relationship as enemies before gradually becoming lovers. Their volatile connection is one of the defining elements of the book, making the casting especially important for viewers eager to see the romance brought to life on screen.
A Dangerous World of Dragons and War
Fourth Wing follows Violet as she enters Basgiath War College, where hundreds of candidates compete to become elite dragon riders for the kingdom of Navarre. The training is brutal, the competition is unforgiving, and the school’s defining rule is simple: graduate or die.
One of Violet’s greatest challenges is surviving the parapet, a narrow and hazardous crossing that candidates must complete before they can attempt to bond with a dragon. The bond between rider and dragon is central to the story. Riders who lose their dragons are left dangerously vulnerable, while dragons without their chosen riders face their own consequences.
The series will explore Violet’s transformation from a scholar and record keeper into a fighter navigating military power, deadly trials and a rapidly deepening relationship with Xaden.
Prime Video’s Ambitious Adaptation Plans
Amazon MGM Studios acquired the television rights to the Empyrean series in 2023. Prime Video officially greenlit the adaptation in May 2026, with Meredith Averill serving as showrunner and executive producer. Lisa Joy is attached to direct the series premiere and executive produce.
The production comes from Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films, and Premeditated Productions. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo executive produce for Outlier Society. Nolan, Joy and Athena Wickham executive produce for Kilter Films, while Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark produce through Premeditated Productions.
If the first season succeeds, the creative team is expected to continue adapting the remaining novels. The Empyrean saga currently includes Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. Yarros is also working on a fourth novel, with a fifth installment planned afterward.
Why the Fourth Wing Casting Matters
The casting arrives as both stars have busy schedules. McGregor is currently filming Life Is Strange for Prime Video and recently appeared in the streamer’s adaptation of We Were Liars. Her film credits include Babygirl, The Room Next Door and Bleeding Love, in which she appeared alongside her father, Ewan McGregor, and sister, Clara McGregor.
Sakraya recently completed work on the third season of Netflix’s One Piece, where he will play Koza, the leader of a rebel army. His previous projects include Sixty Minutes and Tribes of Europa.
For fans, the biggest question now is whether the new series can capture the scale, romance and danger that made Yarros’ novels so popular. With its lead performers in place, Prime Video’s adaptation has taken an exciting step toward bringing Basgiath War College and its dragons to television.
