Rory McIlroy Endures a Stunning Memphis Struggle

“I’m just so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have a chance,” McIlroy said, according to the PGA TOUR report. “I’ve just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit.”

McIlroy is projected to drop from 12th to 14th in the FedExCup standings, but his disappointing result will not eliminate him from the playoffs. He is assured of a place in the 30-player TOUR Championship later this month.
His immediate challenge is the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. McIlroy plans to arrive Tuesday after a short trip home, where he will work with swing coach Michael Bannon and caddie Harry Diamond.
McIlroy has played Bellerive only once competitively, finishing tied for 50th at the 2018 PGA Championship. With little time to correct his timing issues, the upcoming event could reveal whether his Memphis struggles were simply rust or a deeper technical concern.
