Southern California hosts another heavyweight battle when No. 6 Santa Margarita visits No. 8 Centennial on Friday night. The game carries extra emotion after Santa Margarita defeated Centennial 42-7 in last year’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game.
Both teams opened the season with impressive performances. Santa Margarita blanked Jones of Orlando 27-0, with quarterback Fletch Palmer throwing for 242 yards and two touchdowns. His leading target, Class of 2030 standout Kiyan Callis, recorded nine receptions for 105 yards and a score.
Freshman linebacker Aydan Steen also made an immediate impact, finishing with 10 tackles and three sacks. Centennial answered with a 41-21 win over Servite, powered by former Cathedral stars Jaden Jefferson and Quentin Hale. Jefferson accounted for four touchdowns, while Hale caught eight passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.
In Arizona, No. 13 Basha meets No. 23 Chandler on Saturday in a rematch of the 2025 Open Division state championship game. Basha dominated that contest 34-7 and will try to maintain its recent momentum against a familiar opponent.
Another major Arizona result came Thursday, when No. 17 Hamilton defeated Brophy College Prep 25-6. Hamilton’s defense scored twice, including a 95-yard blocked-field-goal return by J.J. Diaz and a pick-six from Kacey Allen Jr. Roye Oliver III, last year’s MaxPreps Sophomore of the Year, did not play in the contest.
Thursday results deliver major statements
No. 14 Sierra Canyon produced one of the week’s most eye-catching wins by defeating No. 21 Chaminade-Madonna 24-7 in the Broward County National Football Showcase. The Trailblazers overcame four first-half turnovers and then outscored the Lions 17-0 after halftime to improve to 2-0.
No. 20 Thompson also made a powerful statement, defeating Clay-Chalkville 37-13 and snapping the Cougars’ 16-game winning streak. Senior quarterback Trent Seaborn has thrown eight touchdowns through two games and has already guided Thompson to quality victories over Central of Phenix City and the defending Class 6A state champions.
Other nationally significant games include No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas against DeSoto, a matchup between defending state champions. Aquinas has won a Florida-record seven consecutive state titles, while DeSoto has captured three of the last four Texas 6A Division 2 championships.
