MSFT is taking a major step toward bringing advanced artificial intelligence directly to personal computers. Microsoft has announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, a premium Windows device starting at $2,599 and powered by an Nvidia AI chip designed to run demanding models locally.
The new laptop is available for preorder and is scheduled to begin shipping on Oct. 16. The announcement came Wednesday at a Microsoft event in San Francisco, where executives presented the computer as a powerful alternative to cloud-dependent AI tools.
MSFT Surface Laptop Ultra brings powerful AI to Windows
The Surface Laptop Ultra is built for users who want to run large AI models without repeatedly paying cloud-computing fees. Microsoft said the machine can handle a variety of models directly on the device, potentially giving developers, researchers and creative professionals faster access to AI features.
The laptop includes a 15-inch display and weighs 4.4 pounds. It can be configured with as much as 128 gigabytes of unified memory and deliver up to one petaflop of computing power. Those specifications place the device well above conventional consumer laptops in terms of local processing capability.
At the heart of the system is Nvidia’s Blackwell RTX Spark GPU. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the chip offers computing power comparable to the company’s DGX-1 data center server from 2016, a system that reportedly cost $250 million at the time.
Surprising magnetic charging and flexible AI workloads
Microsoft also highlighted what it described as the world’s first magnetic USB-C port. The connector works in a similar way to Apple’s MagSafe charging system and is joined by two additional standard USB-C ports.
A demonstration showed how Windows applications can divide workloads between the laptop’s local GPU and cloud services. A green leaf icon indicates when an AI request is processed on the device, while other tasks can be sent to the cloud when additional computing power is needed.
This hybrid approach could give users more control over privacy, speed and operating costs. Local processing may be especially useful for coding assistants, image-generation tools and other applications that handle sensitive information.

Microsoft expands its AI strategy with Windows partners
The Surface Laptop Ultra is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to make AI a central feature of its hardware business. In 2024, the company introduced the Copilot+ PC standard, which required computers to include neural processing units capable of meeting a minimum AI performance level.
Microsoft has since simplified its product branding, leading with the Surface name while continuing to promote premium hardware and hybrid AI experiences. The latest device represents a more aggressive attempt to make local AI processing a selling point for mainstream consumers.
Microsoft Executive Vice President Pavan Davuluri also said Meta will introduce a version of its Muse AI agent for Windows. Muse has gained attention after becoming one of the most popular applications on Apple’s App Store, surpassing ChatGPT in rankings.
The partnership gives Windows users another high-profile AI assistant and could make the operating system more attractive to people looking for personal automation tools. Microsoft is also updating Windows 11’s setup process to help users begin working with OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent platform.
Critical test for Microsoft’s consumer hardware ambitions
Although Windows remains the most widely used PC operating system, Microsoft is not among the six largest PC vendors by unit shipments, according to Gartner estimates. The company has produced Surface computers since 2012, but its hardware business has not matched the reach of major PC manufacturers.
That makes the new laptop an important test. Microsoft is betting that AI capabilities can encourage consumers to pay a premium for its own devices, even as competing companies develop their own on-device computing strategies.
Apple and Google are also working to move more AI workloads away from centralized cloud systems and onto personal devices. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the technology landscape could develop in significantly different directions over the next two, five and 10 years as distributed computing becomes more important.
Analysts have responded positively to the potential of the new hardware. Max Weinbach of Creative Strategies wrote that the announcement might even convince him to return to Windows. Still, Microsoft faces a challenge: its proprietary AI models remain less popular than offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic, while developers frequently use competing platforms.
