CWI Calls for Fairness in Olympic Cricket Qualification
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has taken a significant step by officially reaching out to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the inclusion of West Indies cricket in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The organization is advocating for equitable recognition of the unique structure of West Indies cricket in the current discussions between the ICC and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
With the announcement set for May 15, 2025, CWI emphasizes the need for inclusive pathways that allow Caribbean nations—many of which have rich Olympic traditions—to actively participate in Olympic cricket. Dr. Kishore Shallow, the President of CWI, highlighted the necessity of upholding the Olympic values of fairness, universality, and equal access.
Fair Pathways to Participation
In its correspondence, Cricket West Indies has presented two pragmatic proposals for qualification:
Dr. Shallow articulated the sentiments of many Caribbean athletes, stating, “The Caribbean has always punched above its weight at the Olympics, inspiring the world with our athletic brilliance. Cricket’s return to the Games in 2028 must not exclude our young cricketers from the same dream that has inspired our athletes.”
His remarks shed light on the plight of Caribbean nations and the desire to see their athletes shine on an Olympic stage. He urged that the Olympic Charter’s emphasis on fairness and transparency should be upheld in the qualification process.
Concerns about Current Olympic Rules
The current Olympic guidelines risk excluding both the West Indies Men and Women teams from participating. CWI’s plea highlights the importance of creating pathways that not only recognize the extraordinary legacy of Caribbean nations within the Olympics but also ensure their right to compete at significant global events.
Chris Dehring, Chief Executive Officer of CWI, reinforced this message by calling for collaborative discussions between CWI and ICC. He stressed that, “we cannot let this once-in-a-generation opportunity for national development pass without creating a way for our countries to participate.”
Dehiring acknowledged the Olympic achievements of Caribbean nations individually, expressing that their historical success should be represented on a platform as prestigious as the Olympics. He expressed readiness for dialogue, underscoring a shared commitment to fairness.

The excitement doesn’t just revolve around Olympic inclusion; the cricket calendar is bustling with upcoming fixtures for the West Indies teams:
