Diamondbacks Dominate in 8-0 Win
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks needed a win badly, and they delivered in style with an impressive 8-0 victory over the Rockies this past Friday at Chase Field. This win came after a grueling stretch of 16 games in 16 days, where they faced teams projected to qualify for the postseason. With this win, the Diamondbacks finally managed to clinch back-to-back victories for the first time since April 30-May 1.
Manager Torey Lovullo commented on the team’s previous struggles, noting that lapses in fundamental and defensive plays hindered their efforts. However, against the Rockies, who hold the worst record in baseball, the Diamondbacks executed a complete game on both offense and defense.
Corbin Burnes Shines on the Mound
Key to the Diamondbacks’ success was Corbin Burnes, who put in a stellar performance. The pitcher struck out a season-high 10 batters, allowing just two hits and three walks over six innings. Lovullo praised the clean execution of the game, stating, “It was a pretty clean baseball game. Corbin was fantastic.”
Burnes emphasized the importance of the early offensive support, saying, “It makes my job that much easier when they’re putting up crooked numbers early and giving you the lead to go out there and just attack the zone.” The Diamondbacks built an early lead of 5-0 through the first four innings, giving Burnes the cushion he needed to dominate.
Offensive Contributions
The Diamondbacks’ offense did not hold back on Friday night. A few notable performances included:
- Gabriel Moreno went 3-for-3, hitting two doubles.
- Eugenio Suárez drove in three runs.
- Geraldo Perdomo contributed three RBIs.
This collective effort exemplified the team spirit and effectiveness the Diamondbacks had been striving for during rough patches earlier in the season.
Burnes Overcomes Previous Setbacks
Burnes recently faced some challenges due to shoulder inflammation, which led him to miss a start two weeks prior. After receiving a cortisone injection, he felt better and worked on mechanical issues with the pitching coach, Brian Kaplan. It seems the adjustments paid off, as Burnes has not allowed a run in his last 13 innings pitched.
However, Burnes did express some concern over his performance, particularly the three walks he issued. “The shoulder made it difficult to kind of get the full extent of what we were trying to work on. So now that the shoulder stuff is kind of behind us, we’re starting to see the things we worked on really showing up,” Burnes shared.
Rockies Left Frustrated
On the other side, the Colorado Rockies were left to grapple with their mounting frustrations. Manager Warren Schaeffer acknowledged the challenges, “He’s really good, don’t get me wrong, Corbin Burnes is a fantastic pitcher. But what was it, 14 punchouts, for the second night in a row? That’s not gonna get it done.”
The Rockies’ struggles were further highlighted by their record of just 2-21 on the road and a disappointing 7-37 season overall.
What’s Next for the Diamondbacks?
With the commanding win under their belts, the Diamondbacks are focused on maintaining momentum. Their upcoming games will be crucial as they aim to improve their standing in the league. Also, fans can mark their calendars for an exciting Geraldo Perdomo Bobblehead Giveaway scheduled for May 31.
The Diamondbacks look to build on this performance, taking valuable lessons from previous struggles as they move forward in the season. It will be interesting to see how they can leverage this victory into a successful run in the coming months.
