Researchers at Northwestern University have described the fault as “dying,” suggesting that its movement is slowing and that a major earthquake could be a very long way off. Their analysis points to movement of approximately 0.2 millimeters per year. By comparison, the San Andreas Fault moves about 37 millimeters annually.

One possibility is that some of the region’s present-day tremors are lingering aftershocks from the original 1811–1812 earthquake sequence. Other scientists disagree with that interpretation. Missouri lawmakers discussed earthquake readiness at the 2026 Missouri Earthquake Summit. Mark Marberry, a commissioner for Ste. Genevieve County, told the Ste. Genevieve Herald that the initial response would likely rely heavily on aviation because roads and other infrastructure could be badly damaged. Missouri National Guard units, the Air Force and mobile emergency teams could be needed to move supplies and personnel into affected areas.

The region’s risk is intensified by its geography.
