Billy Crystal is turning devastating personal loss into a deeply personal Broadway performance. In his new one-person show, “860,” the comedian reflects on the destruction of his Pacific Palisades home, the death of his longtime friend Rob Reiner and the power of laughter during the darkest moments.
The show, now in previews in New York, takes its name from the street address of the home Crystal shared with his wife, Janice. A massive wind-driven wildfire destroyed the property in January 2025, along with more than 5,000 homes in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.
Billy Crystal’s Powerful New Broadway Show, “860”
Crystal’s former home was more than a residence. It was where he raised a family, entertained friends and welcomed CBS News correspondent Tracy Smith for several interviews. The property also included a backyard basketball court, where Crystal and Smith famously shot hoops during a 2021 visit.
“Yeah, it kept me young, that place,” Crystal previously said of the home.
Although the fire destroyed everything inside, Crystal said the memories remain. He has recreated his home office in exact detail for the Broadway production, allowing audiences to experience the setting that shaped much of his life.
“Yes, we’re fortunate to have this and have that, but that doesn’t take away the hurt,” Crystal said. “That doesn’t take away the loss.”
A Heartbreaking Story Told With Humor
“860” recounts the morning the wildfire reached the neighborhood, beginning with helicopters and sirens waking Crystal and Janice. Even while describing the fear and confusion, Crystal finds room for an unexpected joke about a half-eaten veal Parmesan sandwich left in the refrigerator.
That balance between grief and comedy is central to the show. Crystal has built his career on finding humor in uncomfortable situations, and he believes laughter can help people survive emotional hardship.
“That’s what I do!” Crystal said when asked how he finds humor in painful memories. “You have to, man. You got to … It’s a healer.”
The comedian’s grief deepened in December 2025, when Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle, were killed in their home. Crystal said he had been with Reiner the night before the deaths, making the news especially difficult to process.
“It’s so insane, because we were together the night before,” Crystal said. “We said goodbye, like, late that night … and then … what?!?”
From “700 Sundays” to “860”
“860” follows another important one-person production in Crystal’s career: “700 Sundays.” That earlier show focused on the approximately 700 Sundays he spent with his father before his father died. The production became a major Broadway success and earned Crystal a Tony Award.
Crystal described “700 Sundays” as cathartic, saying the act of performing helped him process his grief. He believes “860” is already serving a similar purpose.
“It already has, ’cause I’m doing it,” Crystal said. “I’ve absorbed the biggest pains that people couldn’t go through, the loss of home, dearest of friends. And I’m OK.”
The events of 2025 have also affected Crystal’s spiritual outlook. In “700 Sundays,” he spoke about conversations with God. Now, he says he feels less certain because of the many tragedies affecting his life and the wider world.
“This is a weird, scary time,” Crystal said.
Family, Friendship and a Hopeful Future
Although Crystal is the only performer onstage, he has relied on a team of experienced Broadway artists to shape the production. Director Scott Ellis and composer Marc Shaiman helped bring the story to life.
Shaiman said Crystal naturally searches for humor, even in painful memories. Ellis described family and friendship as the emotional core of the production, emphasizing the importance of moving forward with the people who remain.
- “860” is named after Crystal’s former Pacific Palisades street address.
- The show recreates his former home office onstage.
- Performances are scheduled in New York through January 3.
- Crystal hopes to bring the production to Los Angeles after its New York run.
At 78, Crystal says he remains optimistic about what comes next. His home may be gone, but the relationships, memories and sense of humor connected to it continue through his performance.
“If we’ve gotten through this in the way that we’ve gotten through it, we’re doing OK,” Crystal said.
