iPad mini 8 has finally arrived, bringing the compact Apple tablet its most dramatic upgrade yet. Apple unveiled the new iPad mini on October 26, 2026, with a larger OLED display, a powerful A20 Pro chip, improved cameras, faster wireless connectivity, and water and dust resistance.
The new model keeps the familiar portable footprint while making significant changes under the hood. Customers can pre-order the tablet from October 28, with availability beginning November 6 in 36 countries and regions, including the United States.
iPad mini 8 Delivers a Brilliant OLED Experience
The headline feature is an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. Apple says the larger panel fits within the same overall footprint as the previous-generation model because the bezels are 24 percent thinner.
OLED technology enables deeper blacks, improved contrast, and more vivid imagery through pixel-level lighting control. The screen supports the P3 wide color gamut and reaches up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, more than twice the previous generation’s level. Full-screen brightness reaches 600 nits for SDR and HDR content.
Apple has also introduced a new nano-texture display option. Designed to reduce glare, it could be especially useful for artists, field technicians, travelers, and anyone who regularly uses a tablet outdoors. A minimum brightness of one nit should also make nighttime reading more comfortable.
Powerful A20 Pro Chip Targets AI and Gaming
The iPad mini 8 is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built using a 2-nanometer process and a package design inspired by the company’s M-series processors. Apple claims up to 4.5 times faster AI performance compared with the previous model.
The chip includes a seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in every GPU core. Graphics performance is up to 2.7 times faster, while the CPU delivers up to 60 percent faster multithreaded performance. These improvements are aimed at demanding tasks such as photo editing, 3D rendering, gaming, and creative applications.
The 512GB configuration adds a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, giving it 32 processing cores for advanced on-device AI workloads. Apple says the A20 Pro also more than doubles unified memory bandwidth, helping apps respond faster during graphics-heavy and AI-intensive work.
Stronger Cameras, Audio, and Connectivity
Apple has moved the 12MP Center Stage front camera to the landscape edge, making video calls and online meetings feel more natural when the tablet is positioned horizontally. The rear 12MP Wide camera supports Smart HDR 4 and 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second.
An Adaptive True Tone flash improves low-light photography and document scanning. The tablet also introduces an Acoustic Display, pairing specially designed woofers with the screen for stronger bass and louder sound. Custom tweeters are hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure to produce clearer high frequencies.
Wireless performance gets a major boost through Apple’s N1 networking chip, which enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Cellular versions include the C2 modem system, promising up to 50 percent faster cellular data speeds than the previous generation. The new iPad mini also supports eSIM for easier digital plan activation and transfers.
Apple Intelligence Comes to the Compact Tablet
Running iPadOS 27, the iPad mini 8 supports Apple’s next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Siri AI is rolling out in beta and can use personal context, onscreen awareness, and broad world knowledge to help users find information and complete tasks.
Other software features include improved Clean Up, Spatial Reframing, Extend, a new Image Playground experience, and Safari’s Notify Me tools for tracking updates such as product restocks and price changes. With iPadOS 27.2, the tablet also supports extended display mode for multitasking with an external monitor.
