El Niño 2026 is rapidly intensifying and could become one of the most powerful events in modern records, bringing major changes to weather patterns across the United States and influencing global temperatures, according to the latest outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
NOAA now has high confidence that a very strong El Niño will develop during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter seasons. The agency estimates a 69% chance that the event will exceed the strength of every previous El Niño recorded since 1950 between October and December.
The current event is already ranked as the second strongest on record for this point in the year, trailing only the 1997 El Niño. Michelle L’Heureux, a physical scientist at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, said forecasters now have more than a 90% chance of a “very strong” event by the end of 2026.
