A severe thunderstorm warning sent parts of the Las Vegas Valley into turmoil Friday, October 30, as torrential rain, hail and lightning overwhelmed streets, disrupted travel and prompted several swift water rescues.

The National Weather Service issued the warning for the east Las Vegas Valley until 1:45 p.m., citing public reports of hail and intense rainfall. A flash flood warning remained in effect until 3:45 p.m. as water rushed through roadways, washes and low-lying areas.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning Brings Dangerous Flooding

Heavy flooding was reported along Eastern Avenue, both north and south of Interstate 11 and U.S. 95. Videos and photographs from the area showed water covering portions of the roadway, creating dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians.

Officials urged residents to avoid flooded streets and never attempt to drive through moving water. Even shallow floodwater can hide damaged pavement, debris or open drainage channels, while fast-moving water can sweep vehicles away within seconds.

The storm also brought hail and frequent lightning across portions of the valley. The combination of heavy precipitation and limited visibility made travel especially difficult during the afternoon commute and raised concerns for anyone outdoors.

Henderson Rescue Calls End in Tragic Death

Three swift water rescue incidents were reported in Henderson at approximately 1 p.m. Emergency crews responded to several locations where vehicles or people became trapped by rising floodwater.

  • At Lake Mead Parkway and North Pueblo Boulevard, crews rescued a person from a wash. The individual went into cardiac arrest after being brought to safety. Responders provided immediate medical care, but the person was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased.
  • Along Lake Mead Parkway east of the Lake Las Vegas entrance, crews removed two people from a vehicle that had been swept off the roadway. No injuries were reported in that incident.
  • Near North Milan Street and Drake Street, responders assisted after a vehicle became disabled while attempting to cross floodwater. One person climbed onto the vehicle and was rescued. No injuries were reported.

The incidents highlight the rapidly changing danger posed by desert flooding. Dry channels and washes can fill quickly when storms drop large amounts of rain in a short period, even when conditions nearby appear less severe.

Lightning Ground Stop Affects Harry Reid Airport

Travelers at Harry Reid International Airport also faced disruptions during the storm. The airport instituted a ground stop because of lightning, with the restriction expected to remain in place through at least 3 p.m.

A ground stop can temporarily prevent aircraft from departing for or arriving from certain locations while lightning creates unsafe conditions for workers on airport ramps. Passengers were advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest information about delays, cancellations and gate changes.

Power outages added another layer of disruption. NV Energy reported more than 4,000 customers without electricity around 1:40 p.m., with most of the affected customers located in the central valley. By approximately 2:15 p.m., the outage total had fallen to just over 2,000 customers.

What Las Vegas Residents Should Know

The National Weather Service warning underscored the need for caution as the storm moved through the region. Flooding can continue after the heaviest rain has ended, especially near washes, underpasses and roads that collect runoff from surrounding neighborhoods.

Residents should remain alert for additional weather alerts and avoid areas where emergency crews are conducting rescues. Anyone who encounters a flooded roadway should turn around rather than risk becoming stranded.

KSNV, also known as News 3, reported that it was seeking additional information from local jurisdictions about flooding and swift water rescues. The station also asked residents to submit weather photos and video for possible coverage.
